Charlottesville 5/26-27/10

Yeah build day!!! I was soo soo excited to build! It had been almost
two weeks since I last volunteered for Habitat and I was really
missing it. We all split up into different groups, and I ended up
first digging a hole and then weed wacking a jungle. No joke, the
weeds in this back yard came up to my armpits and it was a very very
steep yard with a trench with water in it. I weed wacked all day,
taking breaks to move big branches, drink water and change out the
string. It was a really great feeling, though, to look back at the
yard and see the difference I had made. Relaxed the rest of the day,
Derricks mom came and made us smoothies which were fantastic! We love
food. If you are considering sending anything through maildrops, send
food :)

Build day two in Charlottesvill was also awesome. I worked with
Aileen, Jesse, Andy and Sarah landscaping a rehabed habitat house a
town away. More weed wacking but I didn't do that today, just mulch,
trimming, moving lots of gravel, and other things around the yard. It
was very very hot today, in the 90s at least, but everyone did so
great. All our team members are so hard working, and I- being the
Habitat geek I am-was so very happy to be able to share this passion
of ours together. At night we had a cookout at an alumni and leader of
Bike & Build's house. It was delicious. I need more words to describe
the greatness of the food we are eating. The first mail drop came
today, so that was exciting, nothing for me but lots of candy was
shared among everyone. I've loved Charlottesville, it is a great town
and I cannot wait to come back here some day, I highly recommend that
you visit this town sometime in your life.
peace and love-kristen

  1. I'm glad you had an amazing time sharing all that Habitat awesomeness! I've been doing lots of landscaping too, but just on my own house :) I'm sitting in my room watching will and grace and playing with my very cute cat who discovered drawers make excellent beds today! Good Luck with your LAST full day in Virginia tomorrow!

  2. Wow! What a physical 2 days for you. Using your whole body in service to your KING! So sorry there was nothing in the mail drop for you. Not sure where our card is. Maybe next drop. Your positve attitude shines through your words. You're an awesome gal! Blessings as you hit the road again today! Be safe!

  3. I think "Habitat Geek" is a very fitting title for you as by now I am sure all your teammates would agree. I can't help but think about all the times you complained about having to "weed" the garden here at home when you were younger, yet here you are "weed wacking a jungle" for this Habitat house!! Plan on lots of Clif bars and "sandwich filling" at your next mail drop. Love you!!

  4. Sounds like building was fun! I can just picture you and the weed wacker standing before the jungle of weeds lol I worked and enjoyed the park yesterday even had some Doozies, which was wonderful, but it would have been better if I had gone with my awesome roommates;) Keep pedaling, I can't wait until you get back!

  5. Just saw a tiny little bit of the right side of your trailer while stalking other b&b blogs. I approve of Michigan lol! I hope you survived the mountains today. Only a little over a month till your next/first day off! I spent the day golfing with my Grandpa (with an 8 stroke limit, playing 9 holes, I'm pretty sure I still scored a 71 or 72...I stopped counting when it became depressing!) and frantically trying to get my paperwork in for my internship...Did you know that the fax number on the Family Fare buisiness card that the customer service rep might show you so you will know how to have POP fax the signed forms back is actually the fax number for the pharmacy?? So while I was waiting for the phone call to pick up my fax, growing evermore panicked by the minute, the papers were safely sitting under a bottle of allergy medicine? I didn't know that either! But now I won't forget it! I have to go paint some windows but I'll talk to you later. When is a good time for me to call and say hi?

  6. A good time to call is tricky, I don't have a whole lot of free time but I'd say after 8 pm is a decent time, leave me a message and I will call you back!

  9. Sooooo proud of you. It is wonderful to hear you speak 'fondly' of weed whacking, etc. No complaints about biking all those mountain miles. God is good and He shines through you. Our theme verse at the Conference Grounds this summer is Matthew 5:16:
"Let your light shine before men, that they may ..... praise your Father in heaven."
I pray my light will shine half as bright as yours.
    Random stuff: Memorial Day weather...Perfect!
Lake Michigan....still very cold...in the 50's. Lots of High School graduation parties. Attended Jenni Dyke's yesterday. UCHS girls play 'district' softball today and will play Allendale on Saturday if they win today.
    A little humor:
    Q. What is the best way to get to Paradise?
    A. Turn right and go straight.

A Baptist missionary was walking in Africa when he heard the ominous padding of a lion behind him. "Oh Lord," prayed the missionary, "Grant in Thy goodness that the lion walking behind me is a good Christian lion."

And then, in the silence that followed, the missionary heard the lion praying too: "Oh Lord," he prayed, "I thank Thee for the food which I am about to receive."

Enjoy the last stretch of W VA.
    Blessings,
    Phil and Nancy Pleune
