Manhattan, KS 86 miles

Manhattan, KS 86 miles
A fast day, the road was straight, flat and not very windy. I was
lucky enough to ride with some fast people and had an average speed in
the 20s for the majority of the ride. We were even going 25 mph for a
while before I got stopped and dropped off the line because I needed
to catch my breath and fix my contact. I figured that air and vision
were both important and necessary for biking safely. Everyone arrived
to the host church by 2pm, which is pretty early considering the
mileage. After some napping and a great dinner, we all explored
downtown Manhattan and enjoyed ourselves a little later than usual
because we had a rest day the next day!!!

Rest day!
After a full month of biking or building every day, we enjoyed a day
off! My attempt at sleeping in was a failure and I was up at 7 am,
which I guess is sleeping in more than usual. The day was spent
watching Batman, the Dark Knight, getting a free massage, eating free
Chipotle burritos, getting a new phone from the verizon store, walking
around downtown, visiting a used book store and coffee shop, and a
thrift store. A potluck dinner from our lovely hosts and group
bonding with some head and back scratching followed by trying to jump
and stay on a massive bouncy ball and watching Dirty Dancing completed
our rest day very well!

  1. Kristen, I can't even imagine averaging 20 mph, up to 25 mph - good for you!! On a good day I can ride 10 miles in about one hour, so I guess that means about 10 mph for me. I hate to mention the word "tornado," seeing as how you are currently riding through the state of Kansas, but we were actually under a tornado warning here in Ottawa County last night. They even think a tornado might have touched down in Lamont. I saw some of the pictures of the ominous clouds you encountered in Kansas along with the tree limbs you had to climb over (thanks to Andy's blog). What a sight that must have been to see those storm clouds (sorry you had to ride in that hard rain though). According to the weather map, it looks like you aren't dealing with tornados right now as much as you are with the heat. Looks like a short ride into Clay Center today. Keep cool and enjoy all those free massages. Love you!!

  2. Hi Kristen
I have been back and forth to the Grounds, staying with and helping Donelle out who is camping in our trailer. But today I am home ready to finally get the wash and ironing done from our trip, change the sheets on the bed, vaccuum and dust, and just catch up on the mail. Only thing is the power went off at 7:15 am. We too had a tornado warning, and lots of wind and evidently a power outage somewhere nearby. So needless to say about all I have been able to do is clean the toilets and dust. Tomorrow is a new day.
So sorry you had to buy a new phone! Lost your?
Your day off must have seemed like paradise. Or maybe it felt like you should be biking. Hope it was restful and energizing!!!
We'll keep praying for you! Hope you have a fun mail drop on Thursday! Love you!!
According to my map you are skirting the Smoky Hills and your mom mentioned the heat. I had to send this Psalm along. (121)
"I lift up my eyes to the hills-Where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip-he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you-the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm-he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both NOW and forevermore." Blessings from above!!!!
